Why do customers choose Richard Schultz outdoor furniture?

Our products combine a history of modern design with the highest quality materials. The classic 1966 Collection has been in production since 1966 and remains as fresh today as the day it was designed. Along with the Petal Collection it is included in the Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Our products are all classic designs that will withstand the test of time and look fresh and new in your garden for years to come. They will never go out of style. A trademark of our designs is attention to the fine details of construction.

Why is Richard Schultz furniture costly?

Our products are made with the finest materials available in order to withstand the elements and are manufactured in the USA by Pennsylvania craftsman. Because of the intricacies of the designs we do not have a traditional assembly line. Each piece is handcrafted to order.

What does powder coat mean and why it is important for outdoor furniture?

Our frames are finished with an advanced multi-step powder coat process. Powder coat refers to a coating process where raw powdered plastic is fused onto the aluminum frames in an oven. All frames go through a chemical wash, epoxy primer coat, curing, polyester topcoat, and re-curing. The 400° curing oven melts the plastic to effectively encase the frames in a nylon and polyester coating making them impervious to corrosion. Powder coating is environmentally friendly as there are no solvents to evaporate.

What is porcelain enamel?

True porcelain enamel is glass, not paint. A "frit" is created from ground glass, and is sprayed onto the raw steel top much like glaze on pottery. The tabletops are then heated red hot to 1600° so that the frit melts. The resulting glass surface is easy to maintain and rustproof.

Why do you use PTFE (Teflon) thread?

We sew our slings with a specially designed PTFE (Teflon) thread manufactured for us by W. A. Gore. The thread will not deteriorate with exposure to sunlight, salt air, or pollution, detergents or bleaches and is warranted for the life of the product.

Why do you use stainless steel where it is not visible?

Stainless steel is the best material to use for outdoor furniture. It is strong, and will never rust. We consider it to be well worth the extra expense. All connecting hardware and seat sling supports for the 1966 Collection and Topiary Collection are made of stainless steel. Our 2002 Collection frames are made entirely of stainless steel. We want our customers to be confident that our products will not oxidize or corrode outdoors.

Will my furniture be blown around by the wind?

We cannot guarantee that our furniture will not be blown around, but we have many happy customers who have purchased the 1966 Collection for terraces and rooftops in Chicago, and for decks on yachts. Use common sense, and locate your furniture safely.

Can I use my furniture near salt water?

Our furniture is designed for use in seaside locations. We have done our best to create products that are well made of the best materials, to be able to withstand the elements. You can safely use our furniture outdoors under all normal circumstances.

Can I get a round table for the 1966 Collection?

We offer our 1966 table frames without the porcelain tops and with a special nylon spacer in the top corners of the frame. This allows you to buy our glass tops, or use your own top to create round, oval, square, or rectangular tables. Please download our document Pricelist for seating diagrams and suggestions (see pages 6 and 7).

Why do you only offer customer's own material (C.O.M.) for the Topiary/Confetti product?

There are so many beautiful solids, strips, and patterns on the market that we want to let you decide. See the following manufacturer's websites for our suggestions:

Marimekko: www.txtlart.com
Perennials: www.perennials.com
Sunbrella: www.sunbrella.com

What is a Werzalit© tabletop?

Our Werzalit© tabletops are made of post-formed plastic laminate over a composite wood core. These are among the finest low cost tabletops available, and are intended be used outdoors. Learn more at their website www.werzalit-usa.com/tabletops/

How do you package the furniture for shipping?

We package our furniture in sturdy corrugated cardboard cartons with inserts. We have designed the inserts to "float" each piece of furniture in its carton, so that our furniture arrives safely despite the rough handling of the trucking companies. We pack glass tabletops in wood crates for extra protection. When possible we band the cartons or crates to a wood pallet with steel strapping.

How do I receive my furniture?

When the trucker delivers your furniture you must carefully inspect the cartons for damage. Remove the furniture from the cartons and inspect it with the driver present, if he will wait. Note any damage on the Bill of Lading. If you have any questions download our Receiving Form.

What do I do if I have shipping damage?

Note the damage on the Bill of Lading. Save the cartons. Download our Freight Claim Form, complete it and send it to us with photos. We will have the damaged product picked up and returned to us. We will file a freight claim and will send you new product.

What do I do if I did not receive my entire shipment?

If you did not receive your entire shipment note that the shipment is short when you sign the Bill of Landing. Call us with the appropriate information.

What do I do if I ordered the wrong furniture by mistake?

Download our Exchange Form, complete it, and send it to us for a R.A.N. (Return Authorization Number). We will arrange for return shipping, and will credit your account for the product if it is in perfect condition.

What do I do if I have a warranty claim?

If you have a warranty claim, download our Warranty Claim Form and complete it. Please provide us with a description and photographs of the problem. We will repair or replace the furniture once we have determined the extent of the problem.

How should I maintain my furniture?

Objects that are constantly exposed to the elements such as boats and automobiles require systematic maintenance. Treat your outdoor furniture the same way. See our downloadable care instructions:

1966 Maintenance Instructions
Topiary/Confetti/Café Collection Maintenance Instructions
Petal Table Maintenance Instructions
We recommend investing in a pressure washer to clean your furniture. See the following website for information.

www.homedepot.com
Click under Shop > Outdoor Power Equipment > Pressure Washers & Access.

Do you sell covers for the furniture?

Not at this time. We recommend that for reasonably priced covers you visit the following websites.

Tyvec Covers:

Vinyl Covers:

Do you sell umbrellas?

Not at this time. Making umbrellas is unique and difficult. We recommend that you buy a market umbrella from an established umbrella company such as Santa Barbara Umbrellas www.sbumbrella.com or Brown Jordan Furniture www.brownjordanfurniture.com.

Do you sell tables with umbrella holes?

Only our Topiary or Confetti Dining Table comes with umbrella holes and supports. Our philosophy is that it is better to place an umbrella between the table and the sun (normally to the southwest). This is most effective because other than at noon in the summer the shadows do not fall directly below the umbrella.

Will your replacement slings fit on my old Knoll furniture?

Yes. We have not altered the size or shape of any of the frames. For armless sling replacement please be sure to download

Removing Slings from 1441 Armless Dining and 1421 Armless Lounge Slings
Installing Slings for 1441 Armless Dining and 1421 Armless Lounge Chairs

All other sling installation instructions can be found on our download page.

Why don't you make red and yellow porcelain tabletops like the original product?

The materials used to make these colors contain heavy metals such as cadmium, and have been banned by the EPA.

My Knoll furniture had suede straps. Why don't you offer this option?

The original Knoll vinyl straps were made with chalk fillers. These fillers caused the vinyl to loose its luster and produced a suede-like finish over time. Our vinyl straps are 100% vinyl with UV stabilizers, and will not "chalk".

What happened to the 1966 Interior and 1966 Leather Collections?

We have replaced these collections with the 2002 Custom Fabric and 2002 Leather Collections.

Why don't you sell the Petal Collection in wood any longer?

We are currently looking into an alternate type of wood which will last longer in outdoor applications. We hope to have this ready in the coming year.
